PRESS RELEASE 18/08/2021

Rising energy bills could lead to a perfect storm of debt for families say Citizens Advice Charnwood

Ian Dennis, Chief Officer at Citizens Advice Charnwood warns "it is a good idea to start thinking about ways to reduce your energy bills now".

"15 million households will see a rise in their energy bills this October after record-high gas costs led Ofgem to increase the price cap. This will hit people at the same time as a Universal Credit cut and the end of furlough."

"We are part of the national Energy Advice Programme and can help with getting a price comparison or a cheaper deal; switching supplier and suggesting ways of saving energy. For help with these and all your energy problems ring our Energy Adviser on 01509 221202."

Also, if you are on a low income or getting the guarantee credit part of Pension Credit, you might be able to get £140 off your electricity bill through the Warm Home Discount scheme. This opens on 18 October but as the number of discounts suppliers can give is limited, it is worth checking with them as early as possible to see if you qualify and how to apply. Check with them even if you were eligible for a discount last year.

Local Enquiry line on 01509 649605, Mondays and Thursdays 9.30 am – 3.00pm, Tuesday 9.30am – 12 noon. Information and advice can also be found on the website: www.charnwoodcab.org.uk
